PiMP 2017 – new categories, more variety, same fun! After three great years we have decided to mix things up a bit and introduce new categories for 2017. We will keep the “Professionals at Work” category. We have added the “Open” category, and all images that would have fallen in any of the two previously used categories “Macro” and “Other” are now best suited for the “Open” category.
In addition we have created the “Registrar” category for entries relating to the joys (and occasional pains) of being a Medical Physics registrar. We hope that this will allow for a lot of creativity and might give you a nice outlet. Have fun with this, and please keep some physics in the images, e.g. if someone is shown falling asleep due to excessive work, they should at least be sleeping on a physics textbook.
A fourth category for PiMP 2017 will be “Alternative capture”. Departing from our previous rule that all images need to be captured with a photographic camera, we are now accepting other images. Recognising that we are surrounded by many interesting images, taken with an array of different systems exploiting a variety of mechanisms, we hope this will bring out some exciting work.
As always, the goal is to celebrate our exciting profession and to show off visually stimulating aspects of the work of a Medical Physicist.
Images will be judged by a jury of professionals from Medical Physics and Photography. The criteria are visual impact, storytelling aspects, and technical quality. The top three images in each category will be awarded prizes with the winners each receiving one of the highly coveted “PIMP awards”. We will also again have the public’s choice prize, the “Public PIMP award”, as voted on by members of the Australasian College of Physical Scientists & Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM).
The images will be shown at the EPSM 2017 in Hobart. Selected images will be published on the ACPSEM website and in the Newsletter, on our website (www.PhotographyInMedicalPhysics.com), related social media (www.facebook.com/go4PiMP) and in other publications.

But wait… there’s more: In addition we are looking for images taken at past EPSM meetings. ACPSEM wants to put on a display of these images at the 2017 EPSM. So, if you have any images sitting around on a hard drive, please send them our way (same email address, with “Past EPSM images” in the email subject). You can send up to 10 of those .. or possibly 11. Even better, if you have old prints in a box somewhere, pick the best ones, scan them and also send them to us. Of course, we wouldn’t expect you to do this for nothing, there will be a second, publicly chosen price for the best past EPSM image… like the “Public Past EPSM PiMP Award” (PPEPA). We will figure out a name and make a trophy in due time.

O – Open – entries relating to all issues of Medical Physics, including macro and others
R – Registrar – images related to being a Medical Physics Registrar (submitting photographer does not have to be a registrar)
A – Alternative capture – images relating to Medical Physics that have been captured with imaging devices other than a photographic camera. This could be anything from an x-ray machine to a Xerox copier.
E – images from past EPSM meetings

This year’s Photography in Medical Physics (PiMP) competition concluded at the Engineering and Physical Sciences in Medicine Conference, EPSM 2016 in Sydney. The finalist images were on display at the booth of our sponsors, the Gamma Gurus and were shown on the large screens in the symposia rooms of the Australian Technology Park Conference & Event Centre between the scientific presentations.
The PiMP 2016 winners were announced during the afternoon tea break on Wednesday. As before, there were three thematic categories judged by our panel of judges plus the People’s Choice (Public PiMP) award chosen by members and staff of ACPSEM.

We have received such fantastic images and great feedback from our second PIMP competition last year, we’ve decided to do it all again this year! We invite you to submit your best shots to PiMP 2016.
The rules remain the same: all Medical Physicists are invited to submit up to 5 photos per person to the 2016 “Photography in Medical Physics” (PIMP) competition. The goal is to celebrate our exciting profession and to show off visually stimulating aspects of the work of a Medical Physicist.
